What Bathroom Plumbing Includes
Bathroom plumbing comes down to three parts: the water supply, the waste pipes and the fixtures themselves. Each part throws up its own problems, and a fault in one often surfaces in another.
Hot and cold supply
the lines running to your shower, basin and bath, plus the mixers and tapware at each one.
Waste pipes
the drains carrying used water from every fixture out to the sewer.
Fixtures
the shower, the basin, the bath and everything mounted to them.
Salt off the bay eats brass tapware in the beachfront streets, so a coastal mixer often wears out years sooner than an inland one would. Our shower repairs page covers mixer and shower faults in detail, and leaking shower repairs deals with water escaping the recess.
For the other wet rooms, our tap and toilet plumbing and kitchen and laundry plumbing pages set out that work, and hot water plumbing covers the systems feeding your hot taps.

Rules That Apply When a Bathroom Changes
The split is straightforward: swapping a fixture is minor work, while adding one or moving it is notifiable work. Queensland's plumbing laws draw that line by what changes, not by how big the job feels.
Minor work
a like-for-like fixture swap. A licensed plumber does the job, and no permit or Form 4 applies.
Notifiable work
adding a fixture or relocating one in a building that already exists. No council permit is needed, and the plumber files a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of completing the work, with a copy going to you.
Renovations
a bathroom addition, extension or full reno is also notifiable work, needing a licensed plumber but no council permit or inspection.
The paperwork matters when you sell. A Form 4 on the QBCC register is the record that the work was done legally. Our bathroom renovation plumbing page walks through what a renovation involves.

Why Most Bathroom Plumbing Is Licensed Work
Yes, regulated bathroom plumbing is for licensed plumbers, and the jobs you may legally do yourself make a very short list. The rules protect the house, the owner's health and the owner's legal rights.
The QBCC's unregulated list covers two bathroom jobs: replacing a shower head, and replacing a washer or jumper valve in a tap. Anyone with the right knowledge and skill may do those. Putting in a completely new tap crosses into licensed territory, and so does everything beyond it.
There's a second catch. Even unregulated work has to meet the minimum standard set by plumbing law and the codes. A DIY washer swap done badly can cause more damage than the drip it was meant to fix, and salt-seized fittings on the peninsula make that a real risk here.

Australian Standards for Bathroom Plumbing
Any tap or shower you buy needs two marks before it can be legally installed: WaterMark certification, plus WELS registration. WELS stands for Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards, the national scheme rating fixtures by water use. Both marks appear on the product or its packaging, and we install nothing without them.
WaterMark
shows the product meets national plumbing code requirements for safety and being fit for purpose.
WELS
covers water efficiency, with stars and consumption printed on the label.
Minimum stars
a new dwelling needs 3 stars on its showerheads and tapware; a renovation is exempt.
Tap temperature
hot water at the tap is capped at 50°C in a home by a temperature control device, a level enough for hygiene and scald safety.
Choosing fixtures is easier when you know what the labels mean. Our bath installation page covers the supply and waste side of putting a bath in.

The Bathroom Jobs We Handle
We work on every fixture in the room, in cottages, walk-up units and the newer apartments alike. Many cottages and unit blocks around Hitchins Park are onto their third storage tank by now. Those old cylinders quit without warning, so a cold snap often brings a flood of calls about cold showers alongside the bathroom work.
Repairs
mixers, taps, spouts and wastes at any fixture in the room.
Installs
new fixtures swapped into existing positions, or moved as part of a renovation.
Renovation plumbing
re-running supply and waste lines when a bathroom layout changes.
Leaks
water tracking along walls, floors and ceilings from a hidden bathroom fault.

Questions About Bathroom Plumbing
Call (07) 3523 7121Can I plumb my own bathroom in Queensland?
No, regulated work is for licensed plumbers. The only bathroom jobs on the QBCC's unregulated list are changing a shower head and replacing a tap's washer or jumper valve. Everything past those two needs a licence.
Is moving a basin or shower notifiable work?
Yes, when the building is already standing. Moving a basin or shower, or installing an extra fixture, is notifiable work: the plumber files a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days and a copy goes to you. No council permit applies.
When does a bathroom repair become a renovation job?
Replacing a fixture with the same kind in the same spot is minor work. Adding a fixture, or shifting one to a different position, makes the job notifiable, which is how renovation plumbing in Margate is classed. What changes decides the category.
Who maintains the shower tray in a Margate unit?
The lot owner or occupier maintains the shower tray, even if the tray sits on common property. Body corporate law across Queensland sets this rule, so it applies to the units near Margate Beach and the newer blocks behind.
How do I check a bathroom plumber is licensed?
Check the QBCC's licence register online. It confirms the plumber's licence and shows any Form 4 lodged for your address. Ask for the licence number before work begins and verify it yourself.
Does bathroom plumbing work come with a warranty?
Yes, our labour carries a lifetime labour warranty, and the Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee backs it (T&Cs apply). If we're late, $100 comes off your bill.
